The Real McCoy 12 Year Old Prohibition Tradition is a limited edition Barbados rum created in honor of the 100th anniversary of the start of American Prohibition in 1920 and the legendary rum runner Bill McCoy. McCoy built his reputation by never diluting or altering his alcohol with cheap ingredients. His honest bottles became synonymous with authentic quality – “The Real McCoy”.
The rum comes from the family-owned Foursquare Distillery in Barbados and is produced by blending distillates from pot still and column still distillation. This so-called single blended rum combines the fuller and more aromatic character of pot still distillate with the lightness and elegance of column still rum.
The individual components aged for a full 12 years in the tropical climate of Barbados. Heavily charred American oak barrels previously used for bourbon and virgin American white oak barrels were employed. This combination brings a pronounced woody and spicy character, complemented by notes of honey, vanilla, caramelized nutmeg, and black pepper.
Prohibition Tradition was bottled at 100 Proof, or 50% alcohol, which highlights its robust texture and complexity. The edition is limited to only 6,000 bottles, making it an interesting choice for collectors and lovers of drier, natural Barbados rums.
Like other rums from The Real McCoy, it contains no added sugar, artificial flavors, perfumes, or chemical stabilizers. Its character is developed through distillation, tropical aging, and working with quality oak barrels.
