The Spot Whiskeys brand has its roots in Dublin, where the Mitchell family opened a grocery and confectionery store in 1805. In 1887, they expanded into the wine and spirits business on Kildare Street.
At that time, it was common for merchants to buy spirits in their raw state and mature them in their own barrels. Mitchell & Son used empty wine, sherry, and port barrels, which they filled with distillate from the Jameson distillery on Bow Street. They marked these casks with colored dots according to the age of the whiskey - blue for 7 years, green for 10 years, yellow for 12 years, and red for 15 years - which inspired the name "Spot" whiskey.
Today, Spot Whiskeys are produced at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork, still using the traditional method of maturing in a combination of different types of sherry and bourbon casks. The best-known varieties include Green Spot,Yellow Spot, Red Spot, and Blue Spot. These whiskeys are affordable, yet offer exceptional quality and complexity of flavors.
