This 10-year-old single malt whisky won a gold medal at the World Spirits Competition in San Francisco in 2006. A classic from the Speyburn distillery.
The whisky is made exclusively from malted barley and water sourced from the Broad Burn and Granty Burn springs near the Speyburn distillery. Distillation takes place in traditional copper stills. The whisky is then aged for 10 years in American oak casks - ex-bourbon casks and ex-sherry casks (Spanish sherry casks) - giving it its exceptional sweetness and depth.
The aroma is quite citrusy and aromatic. Sugared orange peel and herbal notes, wood shavings and pine oil, menthol leaves and winter spices. You won't miss the notes of malted barley and the sweetness of grain.
The flavour is medium-bodied and quite smooth, with well-balanced notes of the sweetness of grain, grapes, dates and malt extract and aniseed with hints of something herbal and a touch of smoke. The finish is quite long, with plenty of barley.
This whisky is best served neat, at room temperature, or with a very small drop of water added to open up more fruity and spicy layers. It is suitable as a whisky for everyday drinking or for the beginning of a tasting, or as a subtle base for cocktails where we do not want dominance, but rather a supportive sweet character.
