This 10-year-old single malt whisky won a gold medal at the World Spirits Competition in San Francisco in 2006. A classic from the Speyburn distillery.
Whisky is made exclusively from malted barley and water sourced from the Broad Burn and Granty Burn springs around the Speyburn distillery. Distillation takes place in traditional copper stills. The whisky then ages for 10 years in American oak casks - in ex-bourbon casks and ex-sherry casks (Spanish sherry casks) - which gives it its exceptional sweetness and depth.
The aroma is quite citrusy and aromatic. Sugared orange peels and herbal notes, wood shavings and pine oil, menthol leaves and winter spices. You won't miss the notes of malted barley and grain sweetness.
The taste is medium-bodied and quite smooth, with well-balanced notes of grain sweetness, grapes, dates, malt extract, and anise with hints of something herbal and a touch of smoke. The finish is relatively long, with plenty of barley.
This whisky is best served neat, preferably at room temperature, or with a very slight addition of a drop of water, which allows more fruity and spicy layers to open up. It is suitable as a whisky for casual sipping or as an introduction to tasting, or as a gentle base for cocktails where we want a supporting sweet character rather than dominance.
