Old Monk The Legend is a special edition limited bottle (in the shape of the founder's head), launched in 2013 by Mohan Meakin Limited. Although it does not have an official age statement, it is reportedly aged in oak barrels for at least 7 to 12 years. The alcohol content is 42.8%, typical for most products in the Old Monk range.
The aroma presents a softer and cleaner scent compared to the seven-year-old version – notes of caramel, vanilla, and waxy nuances are felt, complemented by spicy hints of orange and banana peel. The oriental spices make the aroma a pleasant aromatic experience.
The taste is elegantly balanced – sweet caramel and vanilla have a gentle onset, accompanied by a citrusy grip of orange and banana peel, complemented by spices, oak wood, and honey. In the mouth, one can perceive dried apricots, figs, and drinking black tea of the Orange Pekoe type. The profile is less distinctly "molasses-like" than the 7-year-old version, yet still richly sweet and includes notes of toffee and dried fruit.
The finish is medium-long, slightly dry with hints of salty caramel and spices. Very subtle tea or tobacco notes even emerge, adding complexity and derivation. The body feels smooth, less viscous than typical 12-year-old rums, yet surprisingly sleek.
