Oban is one of the oldest and most significant Scottish distilleries, bridging the worlds of Highlands and island whisky. Its whisky is known for combining the malty sweetness and delicate fruitiness typical of mainland regions with a subtle hint of smoke and maritime salinity characteristic of island distillates.

The Oban distillery was founded in 1794 by the brother duo John and Hugh Stevenson in the town of Oban on the west coast of Scotland. Interestingly, the distillery was established before the town itself – it was around it and the fishing port that the present-day town of Oban, known as the “Gateway to the Hebrides,” began to take shape.

During the 19th century, the distillery changed hands several times and in 1898 was acquired by the Dew of Ben Nevis company, which shortly thereafter went bankrupt. Oban has since experienced periods of stagnation but has never ceased to exist. Today, it is under Diageo and is part of the prestigious Classic Malts of Scotland collection, representing the west coast.

Oban is a relatively small distillery – it has only two stills, making its production among the smallest of well-known brands (around 870,000 liters annually). However, this allows for consistent quality and traditional character.

The Oban whisky is made from malt dried with gentle peat smoke, giving it a subtle smoky note. It primarily matures in oak casks previously used for bourbon, with some editions also aged in sherry casks, which add fruitiness and depth.

It is considered a “bridge” between Highlands and island whisky: it is not as peaty as Islay brands, but has more smoke and maritime flavor than classic Speyside whiskies. Oban 14 Years Old is often recommended as the ideal “introduction to single malt whisky” – a complex yet approachable profile.
