Champagne is the most famous and prestigious sparkling wine in the world. The name “Champagne” may be used only for wines produced in the Champagne region of France, made exclusively by the traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle. This unique combination of terroir, grape varieties and meticulous craftsmanship gives Champagne its unmistakable character.

Grape varieties and production

Three main grape varieties are used to produce Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The wine ages for several years on the lees, which gives it fine bubbles, a creamy texture and rich aromas. Thanks to ageing length and blending styles, Champagne ranges from fresh and light to complex and matured.

Types of Champagne

Brut – the most common style, a dry Champagne suitable for any occasion.
Extra Brut / Brut Nature – very dry, with no added sugar.
Demi-Sec – slightly sweeter, ideal with desserts.
Rosé Champagne – Champagne with a delicate pink colour and fruity notes.
Prestige cuvée – flagship bottles from houses like Dom Pérignon, Krug or Cristal.
