Auchentoshan 12 Year Old
Auchentoshan 12 Year Old is an elegant single malt whisky from the Scottish lowlands that embodies the smoothness and precision typical of this region. It comes from the Auchentoshan distillery, located in the suburbs of Glasgow, and is best known for being the only Scottish distillery to use triple distillation in the production of all its whiskies.
It is this unique process that gives it its exceptionally smooth and pure character. Auchentoshan 12 Year Old is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, which gives it complexity with subtle hints of fruit, spice and sweetness.
The production process begins with carefully selected malted barley, which is processed using traditional methods. After the wort is created, fermentation takes place for approximately 62 hours in a combination of wooden and stainless steel fermentation tanks. This longer fermentation promotes the formation of delicate fruit esters, which later manifest themselves in the final flavor profile.
This is followed by a unique triple distillation in three separate stills – wash still, intermediate still, and spirit still. Thanks to this process, the resulting distillate achieves a high purity and smoothness while retaining its characteristic lightness. Maturation in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks lasts at least 12 years, during which time a rich and balanced flavor profile develops.
The aroma is dominated by notes of crème brûlée, caramelized sugar and vanilla, complemented by fresh citrus aromas, especially lime and tangerine. In the background, there is a subtle nuttiness and a touch of green leaves, creating a fresh and harmonious nose. The taste is smooth and sweet, with distinctive citrus notes mingling with honey, ginger and caramel. The overall impression is elegant, yet pleasantly sparkling. The finish is medium-long, with a slightly dry and spicy aftertaste, in which nuts and ginger spiciness linger.
Auchentoshan is a distillery with a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. It was officially established in 1823, but it is believed that distilling had been taking place at this site even earlier. It is currently part of the Beam Suntory group, and its whiskies are particularly sought after by lovers of smoother and fresher profiles.
The bottles are filled with 40 % alcohol by volume, have a volume of 0,7 l, and are supplied in gift boxes.
