Amaro Montenegro
Amaro Montenegro is an iconic Italian herbal liqueur that was first created in 1885 in the city of Bologna. Its creator was Stanislao Cobianchi, who named the drink in honor of Queen Elena of Montenegro, the wife of Italian King Victor Emmanuel III. The name Montenegro symbolically connects Italian tradition with a historical figure of European monarchy.
This legendary liqueur is made by combining more than 40 different botanical ingredients, including coriander, wormwood, oregano, marjoram, nutmeg, sweet and bitter orange, cinnamon, and cloves. The production involves maceration, distillation, and cooking of herbs, with the exact ratio and processing method remaining strictly secret.
The result is a harmonious herbal liqueur with a characteristic balance between sweetness, bitterness, and citrus freshness. This combination makes Amaro Montenegro one of the most famous Italian amaro liqueurs in the world.
The aroma reveals notes of citrus, herbs, and subtle spices, complemented by a sweet orange scent. The taste is smooth, slightly sweet and herbal, with notes of orange peel, spices, herbs, and a gentle caramel sweetness. The liqueur has an elegant and balanced structure typical of traditional Italian digestifs.
Amaro Montenegro is most often served as a digestif after meals, but it also pairs excellently in cocktails or with ice and a slice of orange.
