Tokaj is one of the world’s most famous sweet wines, with a long tradition shared by Slovakia and Hungary. It is made from specific grape varieties such as Furmint, Lipovina, and Yellow Muscat, grown exclusively in the Tokaj wine region.

How Tokaj Wine Is Made

Tokaj is unique thanks to its special production method. Grapes affected by noble rot Botrytis cinerea turn into so-called aszú berries with a high sugar content. These are pressed to create a sweet must that gives the wine its characteristic golden-amber colour, honeyed fruit aroma, and complex sweet flavour with a long finish.

Types of Tokaj Wines

Tokaji Furmint – a drier, mineral style with pronounced acidity.
Tokaji Aszú (3–6 puttonyos) – traditional sweet Tokaj wine, where “puttonyos” indicates the number of aszú berries used.
Tokaji Szamorodni – made from grapes containing various proportions of aszú berries, available in both dry and sweet versions.
Tokaji Eszencia – a rare and extremely sweet wine with high viscosity, considered a true jewel among Tokaj wines.
