Pálava is an aromatic white wine variety created in Czech Moravia by crossing Tramín Červený (Gewürztraminer) and Müller-Thurgau. It was developed in the 1970s by breeder Josef Veverka and named after the Pálava Protected Landscape Area. The variety quickly spread to Slovakia, where it produces rich, fragrant and harmonious wines with a lightly exotic character.

Grape characteristics and flavour profile

Pálava grapes are medium-sized, yellow-green to golden, with thin skins and pronounced aromatics even during ripening. The wines are typically fuller-bodied, with lower acidity and an expressive fruit-forward profile. Common notes include lychee, rose, citrus, grape must and gentle spicy nuances. Dry styles are elegantly aromatic, while semi-sweet and sweet versions develop a more pronounced honey-floral character.
