Tradition and origin on the Isle of Islay

The distillery was officially founded in 1816 on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay, in Lagavulin Bay, close to today’s Port Ellen. It is therefore one of the oldest legally registered distilleries in the region. In the 19th century, the name gained prominence thanks to Peter Mackie, who developed Lagavulin into a highly respected brand and closely connected it with the world of blended Scotch whisky. Today, Lagavulin is part of the Diageo portfolio and the prestigious Classic Malts of Scotland collection.

How Lagavulin whisky is made

Scotch whisky Lagavulin is produced using heavily peated malt and undergoes a long, slow distillation, which is distinctive even by Islay standards. This process creates a rich, oily spirit with a pronounced structure. On the nose and palate, you will find notes of peat smoke, iodine, sea salt and seaweed, complemented by dried fruit and gentle sweetness derived from maturation in oak casks, often with a proportion of sherry casks.
