William Grant lived in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside. During his youth, Grant worked at the Mortlach Distillery, where he learned a lot about whiskey making. In 1886, with the help of his children, William Grant began construction of the Glenfiddich Distillery. Distillation at Glenfiddich Distillery began on December 25, 1887. Five years later, William Grant bought the nearby Balvenie Distillery.

William Grant was practical when a single-type whiskey appeared. At a time when blended whiskeys dominated the market, Grant sold Glenfiddich as a single whiskey. The company remains one of the few brands of hard alcohol owned by the family. In addition, William Grant is the third largest producer of Scotch whiskey. The company has several brands today. In addition to whiskey, William Grant produces rum, vodka and beer.
