Danube is a modern Slovak variety of red wine, which ranks among the most successful Slovak new hybrids. It was created by crossing the varieties Svätovavrinecké, Portugalské modré, and St. Laurent, with the aim of producing a full, harmonious, and well-structured red wine suitable for the conditions of Slovak vineyards. Danube has gained popularity especially for its rich color, intense aroma, and ability to achieve high extract.

Characteristics of the Berries and Taste of Danube

Danube has dark, smaller berries with a thicker skin and high pigment content, leading to a pronounced, almost inky color of the wine. The flavor profile is full and fruity, with notes of blackberries, plums, cherries, and a subtle touch of spice or chocolate. Thanks to its higher extract, Danube feels denser and more complex, while aging in wooden barrels adds vanilla and toasty nuances. The variety is characterized by soft tannins and a long aftertaste.

What to Pair with Danube

Danube is ideal with beef, game, grilled dishes, or cheeses with medium to strong aroma. Fuller versions shine beautifully with dishes featuring rich sauces or dark chocolate. Serve at 16–18 °C to reveal its depth, structure, and fruity richness.
