Cointreau

Cointreau is a legendary French orange liqueur whose story began in 1849 in the city of Angers. The Cointreau family originally focused on confectionery production but later decided to expand the business into liqueurs made from rare fruits. The greatest success came in 1885 when Edouard Cointreau created a unique, crystal-clear orange liqueur with a perfectly balanced taste of sweet and bitter orange peels. In this form, we know it today as Cointreau, the finest triple sec liqueur.

Triple sec is a special type of orange liqueur that is drier, clearer, and more intense than classic sweet fruit liqueurs. It has a distinctive yet refreshing flavor and has become an essential part of cocktail culture. It forms the base of iconic drinks such as the Margarita, Cosmopolitan, and Side Car.

The brand quickly gained international recognition. By the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Cointreau was exported not only to European countries but also to Russia, America, and Asia, establishing its position as a global leader among orange liqueurs. Interestingly, the producer was a pioneer in modern advertising – among the first to introduce a film commercial featuring the Pierrot character, filmed by the Lumière brothers themselves.

Cointreau remains one of the world’s finest liqueurs, with more than 300 international awards. For nearly two centuries, its name has been recorded in books and bartending guides as a cornerstone of mixology.

Today, Cointreau is part of the prestigious Rémy Cointreau group, formed through a merger with the renowned cognac producer Rémy Martin.
