Blood Oath is a premium bourbon brand that appeared on the market in 2015 and has since made a name for itself thanks to its unique philosophy and approach. The brand is backed by Luxco, now part of MGP Ingredients, and its main creator is John Rempe, master distiller at Lux Row Distillers in Kentucky. Blood Oath was not created as a regular bourbon line – its concept is that each year it will bring a completely new edition that will never be repeated.

Each edition is called ‘Pact’ – a symbol of a kind of secret bond between the producer and the consumer. Each ‘pact’ is a unique blend of different bourbons – sometimes rye, sometimes wheat, or a combination of several styles – and the result is always bottled at 98,6 proof (49,3 % ABV). This number has symbolic meaning: 98,6 °F is the average temperature of the human body, evoking the ‘blood’ in the name and referring to an oath bound by blood.

Blood Oath is also known for experimenting with finishes in special barrels. Some editions are aged in port wine barrels, others in Sauternes, Calvados, rum or Cabernet Franc barrels. This adds further layers of flavour to the bourbon and ensures that each edition is unique. For example, Pact No. 7 was aged in Sauternes barrels, which added sweet and winey notes, while Pact No. 10 was double finished in Cabernet Franc and Merlot barrels.

The brand has deliberately shrouded itself in mystery – it never reveals the exact origin of the individual bourbons used in its blends. This strategy reinforces the mystique and makes Blood Oath a kind of ‘detective story’ for connoisseurs who try to guess where the individual components might have come from.
