Blackwell Rum is a dark rum from Jamaica that combines deep family roots and rich rum tradition with modern craftsmanship.
It was created by Chris Blackwell, the legendary founder of Island Records, who revived an old family recipe in 2008 from the time when his ancestors owned the famous distilleries Appleton Estate and J. Wray & Nephew. He collaborated with renowned Master Blender Joy Spence from Appleton Estate, who infused it with a distinctive Jamaican identity.
The rum is produced in the classic Jamaican way – by fermenting molasses from local sugarcane and then using a combined distillation process in copper pot stills and column stills. This process ensures the depth, structure, and complexity of the rum, while also providing smoothness and balance.
Aging takes place in American white oak barrels, primarily ex-bourbon, for about two years in tropical conditions, which enhances its characteristic notes of wood and spice.
The aroma features a rich mix of caramel, vanilla, toasted marshmallow, tropical fruits like pineapple and banana, with hints of tobacco and orange peel.
On the palate, the rum is very pleasant, with a sweet onset of caramel and chocolate, followed by gently spicy notes of cinnamon, black pepper, and oak. There are also flavor layers of banana bread, honey, and dried fruit. The finish is medium-long, warming, with lingering sweetness, spice, and a subtle hint of tobacco and citrus.
Blackwell Rum is proof that modern rum can draw from history while offering something timeless. With its rich flavor, it is ideal for sipping slowly or in quality cocktails.
