Appleton Estate was reportedly part of the land acquired by Frances Dickinson in 1655 for his services during the English conquest of Jamaica. The estate remained in the Dickinson family until 1845. Over time, a range of rums was produced on the estate. All varieties were created using a pot still and quickly gained a good reputation.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Appleton Estate was acquired by "Wray and Nephew". It is the oldest distillery in Jamaica and the harvest is collected not only by machine but also by machete. The estate is quite large, covering 11,000 acres. Joy Spence is employed as the master blender, the first woman in this position in the distilling industry. Additionally, the aging process follows the same rules that apply to single distillery malt whisky – the stated age must correspond to the youngest spirit in the blend.
