The Rum Trail is a collection of distinctive rums from various parts of the world that showcases the diversity of rum styles through their origins. Instead of a uniform flavor profile, it focuses on what differentiates rums from Barbados, Jamaica, Fiji, Belize, or Australia.

Each bottling aims to preserve the connection to the country, local ingredients, and production methods. The result is a selection of rums that allows for comparison of differences between individual regions – from fuller pot still distillates to lighter and more elegant rums produced in column stills.

Selection Led by Sukhinder Singh

The brand is part of The Elixir Trails project, backed by the London-based The Elixir Distillers – an independent creator, blender, and bottler of premium spirits. The selection of individual rums is led by experienced collector and spirits expert Sukhinder Singh.

His team seeks out casks that can naturally express the craft of the original distillery. The producer's fame is not important; rather, the quality of the distillate, its flavor, and its ability to retain the character of a specific place are what matter. Selected rums can be bottled individually or further refined through careful blending and aging.

Tropical and Continental Aging

The rums of The Rum Trail are characterized by a combination of tropical and continental aging. The first part of the aging process takes place in the country of origin, where the warm climate promotes a more intense interaction between the distillate and the wood, enhancing its local character.

Some rums then continue aging in Europe, particularly in warehouses in Scotland. The cooler conditions allow for a slower development of complex flavors without the wood overshadowing the original expression of the distillate. It is not just about a pronounced finish in a different type of cask, but about further controlled aging that harmonizes and develops the rum.

What to Taste from The Rum Trail

The character of the collection is represented by The Rum Trail Barbados 18 Year Old. This limited molasses rum was distilled in 2006 at a family distillery in the southeast of Barbados. It combines a fuller pot still distillate with a lighter and more elegant column still component.

It aged for the first 14 years in bourbon casks directly in Barbados and then continued aging for another four years in fresher bourbon casks in Scotland. It was bottled at an alcohol content of 48%, and the entire edition consists of only 500 bottles.
