Tequila Añejo (meaning aged) represents the pinnacle of tequila craftsmanship. It is aged for a minimum of one year, often 2 to 3 years, in small oak barrels that give it a rich and rounded character. By law, only tequila aged for more than 12 months may carry the Añejo designation.

What does añejo tequila taste like?

Añejo tequilas offer a deep, complex flavour profile with notes of vanilla, caramel, cocoa, roasted nuts, and a touch of gentle smoke. The agave core remains present, but is integrated with warm, rounded oak tones. Each sip delivers a balanced contrast between sweetness and a dry, woody finish.

Ageing as the source of uniqueness

The barrel ageing process is the key to the exceptional character of Añejo tequilas. Over long months, the tequila loses its sharp edges, gains a darker amber hue, and develops a full, expressive aroma. Premium brands often age their tequilas in ex-bourbon or wine barrels, further enhancing aroma and colour.

100% agave – authentic quality

True Añejo tequilas are made exclusively from 100% blue agave. Compared to cheaper blended versions (mixto), they offer a smoother texture, a longer finish, and no harshness. They are meant for slow sipping, much like cognac or rum.

It is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, in a narrow snifter or copita glass. This allows every sip to reveal all layers of aroma and the full richness of flavour.
