How single malt whisky is made

The base is malted barley, often dried over peat fires, which gives the whisky its distinctive smoky tone. After double distillation, the spirit matures in oak casks for at least three years, though the finest whiskies age for decades. Each cask shapes the flavour differently: ex-bourbon casks bring notes of vanilla, while sherry casks add dried fruit and nuts.
