Quinta da Pedra Alta is a historic winery located in the heart of the Portuguese Douro Valley – one of the oldest and most famous wine regions in the world, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is the only winery in the region that boasts three stone markers known as “Marcos Pombalinos” – historical pillars from the 18th century that marked the most prestigious vineyards authorized to produce port wine. The name of the winery, “Pedra Alta,” translates to “high stone.”

The history of this quinta dates back to the port wine reform in the 18th century when the Marquis of Pombal established new rules and systematized wine production in the Douro. Since then, Quinta da Pedra Alta has become a synonym for quality, tradition, and respect for terroir. For many generations, it belonged to local Portuguese families who carefully maintained its vineyards and cellars.

A turning point in the modern history of the winery was 2018, when the winery came under the leadership of Australian oenologist Matthew Copping and a team of passionate experts from the UK and Portugal. Their goal was to restore the winery's former glory while bringing a modern approach to winemaking with an emphasis on sustainability, authenticity, and respect for nature. Under their guidance, Quinta da Pedra Alta began to specialize not only in traditional port wines but also in elegant dry wines – white, red, and rosé – that reflect the diversity and potential of the Douro region.

Today, the Quinta da Pedra Alta brand is known for its focus on artisanal production, working with local varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Rabigato, and Gouveio, and preserving traditional methods like foot-treading grapes in stone tanks (lagars). Their wines celebrate the land, heritage, and a new chapter in the story of one of the most beautiful wine regions in Portugal.
