The rum brand Pitú was founded in 1938 in the town of Vitória de Santo Antão in the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. It got its name from the local stream "Pitú," where freshwater shrimp were found, which became the symbol of the brand and are also depicted on the labels. It was established by the Ferrer de Morais and Cândido Carneiro families, with the production tradition being passed down by the fourth and fifth generations of this family-run company.

The distillery is located in the tropical region of Pernambuco, which is considered the cradle of sugarcane in Brazil and is often referred to as the "land of cachaça and carnival." Pitú produces over 90 million liters annually, combining traditional methods with modern technologies and a focus on consistent quality, including aging in wooden tanks as part of the product finishing.

Pitú was one of the first Brazilian cachaças to start exporting - in the 1970s to Europe and in the 1980s to the USA. Today, you can find Pitú in more than 50 countries, and it is the most exported cachaça brand in the world. In the domestic market, it is the best-selling in northeastern Brazil and ranks second worldwide.
