The history of Paddy Irish Whiskey dates back to 1779, when the Cork Distilleries Company was established in Irish Cork. It produced various types of Irish whiskey, which were initially sold under the generic name “Cork Distilleries Company Old Irish Whiskey.” By the 19th century, this product gained popularity among locals due to its smoothness and easy drinkability, which was in stark contrast to the heavier Scotch whiskies of the time.

The brand name “Paddy” only appeared in the early 20th century. The company’s sales representative, Paddy O’Flaherty, was known for his charismatic approach to customers – when visiting pubs, he often paid for a round of whiskey for the patrons. This generosity and his name naturally became associated with the product, which people began to simply call “Paddy’s whiskey.” In 1913, the company decided to officially adopt this informal name, thus creating the brand Paddy Irish Whiskey.

Paddy has maintained its reputation as one of the most accessible and smoothest Irish whiskeys, known for its triple distillation process and a blend of single pot still, malt, and grain whiskey. In the 20th century, it became one of the most exported Irish whiskeys, popular in Europe and across the ocean. Today, Paddy Irish Whiskey is still produced at Midleton Distillery (alongside other icons like Jameson and Redbreast) and remains a symbol of accessible, friendly, and traditional Irish hospitality – true to the spirit of its legendary patron Paddy O’Flaherty.
