Kahlúa

The story of the Kahlúa brand began in 1936 in Mexico’s Veracruz state, where two entrepreneurs, Senior Blanco and Montalvo Lara, together with the Alvarez brothers, combined their expertise and regional coffee to create a unique product among coffee liqueurs.

The name Kahlúa comes from Arabic languages and means “coffee”. It is made from 100% Arabica coffee beans and quality rum. Shortly after its creation, Kahlúa became a popular liqueur not only in Mexico but also in the United States, where it was exported as early as 1940.

Kahlúa became an icon of cocktail culture. It is the base of legendary drinks. In the 1970s, Kahlúa gained popularity with the layered B-52 shot, while in the 1980s it took the world by storm with the Espresso Martini and became the best-selling coffee liqueur in the world. Its popularity was further boosted by original advertising campaigns, female leadership in the 1960s, and iconic appearances in the film industry in the 1990s. The White Russian cocktail, for example, became a cult classic thanks to the movie *The Big Lebowski*.

You can also prepare the popular 1980s drink – Espresso Martini. You’ll need 50 ml of vodka, 1 strong espresso made from specialty coffee, 30 ml of Kahlúa coffee liqueur and 10 ml of sugar syrup. Shake everything well in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into a martini glass.
