Ground coffee is the most common form of coffee we encounter in everyday use. It is produced by grinding roasted coffee beans that are grown in various parts of the world, most often in the tropics. After harvesting, the beans are processed – either by dry or wet methods – and then roasted. Roasting is a key step in which the green coffee beans acquire their typical brown color, aroma, and flavor profile. Only then does the actual grinding take place, which transforms the beans into different particle sizes depending on how the coffee is to be prepared.

The grind size plays a crucial role here. Coarsely ground coffee is particularly suitable for preparation in a French press or for cold brew, where longer steeping is important. Medium-ground coffee is ideal for classic drip coffee makers or moka pots, while finely ground coffee is intended for espresso, where extraction takes place under high pressure and in a short time. There is also extra-fine grinding, resembling powder, which is used in traditional Turkish coffee.

An important factor in ground coffee is freshness. When ground, coffee loses its aroma much faster than whole beans. Therefore, it is best to grind it just before preparation. If you use pre-ground coffee, it should be stored in a well-sealed container, away from sunlight, moisture, and heat to preserve its properties for as long as possible.

In addition to the grind size, the origin and type of coffee beans also play a role. Arabica is known for its mild flavor, fruity notes, and lower caffeine content, while Robusta is stronger, more bitter, and contains more caffeine, often used in espresso blends. Ground coffee is therefore the result of a long and precise process that begins on coffee plantations and ends in your cup of fragrant coffee.
