The Gosling family arrived in the Bermuda by chance. In 1806, James Gosling sailed to America with goods intended for sale worth £10,000. The sea was so calm that after the ninety-first day of the voyage, the ship was forced to anchor in the harbor of St. George, completely at the northern end of the island. In December, Gosling established a shop on the Royal Naval Dockyard in St. George. In 1824, he returned to England and, along with his brother Ambrose, set up a shop on Front Street. In 1857, the company was named Gosling Brothers and a few years later, the very first barrels of alcohol arrived from Bermuda. Originally, rum was sold directly from the barrel, and customers often brought their own bottles. In an effort to cut costs, they used champagne bottles sealed with black wax. This is how Black Seal was created. Gosling became the largest exporter of any Bermudian product.
