The Glen Elgin distillery is located in the Speyside region. It was built in 1890. The distillery has a huge capacity for malting barley. Its 36 malting vessels can hold 400 tons of barley mix - more than the combined capacity of the other three distilleries in the Elgin group.
An interesting feature is the use of old technology of "worm tubs for cooling vapors during distillation," which, unlike modern condensers, adds depth and richness to the resulting spirit. A bonus of this now unconventional technology is the breeding of freshwater shrimp, which thrive very well in the tubs here.
