Furmint is a noble variety of white wine with roots in northern Hungary and southern Slovakia, particularly in the Tokaj region. It is one of the most significant varieties of the region, which is the foundation of the famous Tokaj wines, but in recent years it has also experienced a renaissance in the form of modern, dry styles. Furmint is characterized by lively acidity, elegant minerality, and the ability to beautifully reflect the terroir of individual vineyards.

What does Furmint taste like?

The Furmint berries are small to medium-sized, with a yellow-green skin that takes on a subtle golden-yellow hue at full ripeness. The variety ripens later, and its grapes have a naturally higher acidity, contributing to the excellent freshness of the wine. Typical notes include citrus, green apple, pear, complemented by mineral and chalky nuances. In dry versions, Furmint feels firm and clean, while in sweet Tokaj styles, it brings honeyed, dried fruit, or a gentle touch of caramel.

How to serve Furmint

Furmint pairs excellently with fish, seafood, poultry, mild cheeses, Asian cuisine, or vegetable dishes with a light spiciness. Dry variants are ideal for everyday drinking and gastronomy, while sweet Tokaj styles complement desserts or savory cheeses.
