El Ron Prohibido is an authentic Mexican rum that retains the historical character of rum known as ‘Chinguirito’ or ‘Habanero’. This style originated in the 18th century when Spanish ships full of wine barrels filled the barrels with new rum upon arrival in the New World – the rum gradually acquired the aromas from the barrels until it was banned by Spanish King Felipe V due to its immense popularity.

Today, the El Ron Prohibido brand is owned by Cervecera Mexicana S de RL, founded in 2003 and also known for beer brands such as Cucapá and Malafacha. Production combines traditional Mexican methods with modern production techniques. The rum is made from sugar cane juice (guarapo) or molasses, fermented and distilled in columns. It is then aged using the solera system in ex-sherry or bourbon barrels, which creates a complex sweet-bitter profile.
