Buffalo Trace

The history of the Buffalo Trace Distillery dates back to the 18th century, when pioneers such as Daniel Boone and the Lee family founded a settlement along the Kentucky River. The first distillation on this site dates back to 1775, and in 1870 Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. named the distillery O.F.C. (Old Fashioned Copper), laying the foundations of modern bourbon production. In 1878, George T. Stagg joined him, and the distillery became one of the most important producers of American whiskey in Kentucky.

Despite fires, floods, and even Prohibition, the distillery survived thanks to its license to produce spirits for “medicinal purposes.” After the war, it was led by Albert B. Blanton, whose name lives on in the iconic Blanton’s – the world’s first single barrel bourbon, introduced in 1984. In 1999, it was officially renamed Buffalo Trace Distillery, with the new flagship Buffalo Trace Bourbon becoming an immediate symbol of quality.

Today, Buffalo Trace Distillery belongs to the Sazerac Company and proudly holds the title of a U.S. National Historic Landmark. In addition to the award-winning Buffalo Trace Bourbon, it produces legendary lines such as Eagle Rare, Blanton’s, E.H. Taylor, W.L. Weller, George T. Stagg, and Pappy Van Winkle. The distillery is also renowned for its experimental projects, its own cornfields, and the unique Warehouse X, where new methods of bourbon aging are tested.

Buffalo Trace is today the world’s most awarded distillery, having won dozens of “Distillery of the Year” titles. It is a place where more than 200 years of history meet bold innovation, creating new legends in the world of bourbon.
