Juniper brandy is one of the traditional Slovak alcoholic beverages with a typical aroma and flavor of juniper berries. It is made from juniper distillate or macerate, often in combination with fine alcohol.

The alcohol content usually hovers around 40%, giving it a distinct, fresh character.

Origin and Character

The origin of juniper brandy dates back to the times when distillates similar to gin began to be produced in Central Europe. Unlike gin, juniper brandy exclusively uses juniper berries without the addition of other herbs. Within the European Union, it has a protected geographical indication that confirms its Slovak origin.

Variants of Juniper Brandy

Today, many variants of this "forest" drink are available. Lime, cranberry, or even pink or golden with a sprig of juniper in the bottle. The most famous and popular flavor is Juniper Brandy with Gentian. It is created by infusing gentian root in juniper brandy. Gentian is a mountain plant whose root is used in folk medicine for digestive issues.
