The history of Benriach began in 1898, when the distillery was founded by the experienced visionary John Duff in the Speyside region. After a short period of operation, it was halted by the economic crisis. However, the maltings remained operational and supplied malt to the neighboring distillery Longmorn. Thanks to this, Benriach was preserved and could be reborn after years.
In 1965, production was revived and the distillery returned to traditional craft methods. In the 1970s, it began using peat-dried barley again, reviving the original smoky character of Speyside whisky. Today, Benriach produces three styles of single malt whisky: Classic, Peated, and Triple Distilled, setting it apart from most producers in the region.
In 1994, the brand launched its first 10-year-old Benriach Single Malt, marking the start of a new era. After 2004, when Billy Walker took over the distillery, it made a return to the global stage. Since 2016, Benriach has been part of the Brown-Forman group, known for brands like Jack Daniel’s. The creation of whisky is overseen by Dr. Rachel Barrie, a renowned Master Blender.
Benriach is known for its diverse maturation in various types of casks. It uses everything from bourbon, sherry, and rum casks to port casks, giving their whisky a complex flavor with notes of fruit, honey, vanilla, and subtle smoke.
