Armagnac is a noble type of brandy originating from the French region of Gascony, specifically from the areas of Gers, Landes, and Lot-et-Garonne. It is one of Europe’s oldest spirits – its history dates back to 1310, when monk Vital du Four mentioned “distilled wine with healing properties.”

How Armagnac is made

Armagnac is made from white wine distilled only once in traditional copper stills (Armagnac alambic). This process gives it a smooth, fruity, and spicy character with a rustic soul, unlike its relative – Cognac.

After distillation, it matures in oak barrels, developing deep tones of vanilla, wood, and dried fruit.

Regions and styles of Armagnac

Traditionally, Armagnac is divided into three zones that define its style and quality:

Bas-Armagnac – the most prestigious area, known for delicate and elegant spirits,
Ténarèze – fuller and spicier Armagnacs with longer aging potential,
Haut-Armagnac – rare, lighter, and aromatic spirits with a distinctive terroir.

Armagnac vs. Cognac

While Cognac is double-distilled and has a smoother profile, Armagnac feels more authentic, with deeper texture and natural complexity. Thanks to its lower level of industrial production, it preserves its traditional character, artisanal origin, and the true “soul of Gascony.”
