Armagnac is a noble type of brandy originating from the French region of Gascony, specifically from the areas of Gers, Landes, and Lot-et-Garonne. It is one of the oldest distillates in Europe – its history dates back to 1310 when monk Vital du Four mentioned "distilled wine with healing properties".

How Armagnac is Made

Armagnac is made from white wine, which is distilled only once in traditional copper stills (Armagnac alambic). This method gives it a smooth, fruity, and spicy character with a more rustic soul than its relative – cognac.

After distillation, it ages in oak barrels, where it acquires deep notes of vanilla, wood, and dried fruit.

Regions and Types of Armagnac

Traditionally, Armagnac is divided into three zones that determine style and quality:

Bas-Armagnac – the most prestigious area, known for its smooth and elegant distillates,
Ténarèze – fuller, spicier Armagnacs with longer aging potential,
Haut-Armagnac – rare, lighter, and fragrant distillates with a distinct terroir.

Armagnac vs. Cognac

While cognac is distilled twice and has a smoother profile, Armagnac feels more authentic, with a deeper texture and natural complexity. Due to its lower degree of industrial production, it retains its traditional character, artisanal origin, and the "soul of Gascony".
