The move towards world-class malt whisky

The production of malt whisky began only in the 1980s, at a time when most Indian whisky was made from molasses with only a minimal proportion of malt. Amrut chose a different path – to produce whisky that would meet international standards. To refine its production methods, the company enlisted experts from Scotland and gradually developed a style that is now regarded as one of the most respected outside traditional whisky regions.

Barley, maturation and India’s unique conditions

The barley used to produce Amrut whisky is grown at the foothills of the Himalayas, while maturation takes place at an altitude of over 900 metres above sea level near the city of Bangalore. Tropical conditions have a significant impact on the whisky’s character – maturation is much faster than in Europe, with the so-called angel’s share reaching up to 15% per year. These conditions give Amrut whisky its intense, concentrated character and distinctive flavour profile.
