A Mesccia Monaco Heritage Rum draws on the nearly forgotten tradition of the Principality of Monaco, with roots dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Monaco was an important Mediterranean port, where rum brought from the Caribbean met European fortified wines, especially vermouth and Marsala. It is from this combination that the historical “mesccia,” a blend of various drinks, originated.
The modern A Mesccia does not literally replicate this tradition. Instead of adding vermouth directly to the rum, it utilizes its previous presence in the wood. Rum therefore ages exclusively in barrels that previously held Italian vermouth, which gradually imparts herbal, spicy, and wine notes without overshadowing the rum's inherent character.
The project is a collaboration between Distillerie de Monaco, Velier, and Luca Gargano. A Mesccia thus connects rum tradition with the history of Monaco and represents a contemporary interpretation of a drink that was once part of the local maritime culture.
La Maison du Whisky specifies approximately one year of aging in Monaco in barrels that previously held Bordiga and Del Professore vermouths for this edition. The rum is then bottled at 49% alcohol by volume.
The result is an unconventional rum, where the vegetal and fruity character intertwines with aromatic herbs, sweet spices, and a subtly bitter vermouth finish.
