Tokaj is among the most famous sweet wines in the world and has a long tradition shared by Slovakia and Hungary. It is made from specific grape varieties such as Furmint, Lipovina, and Muscat Blanc, grown exclusively in the Tokaj wine region.

How Tokaj wine is made

Tokaj is exceptional due to its special production method. Grapes affected by the noble rot Botrytis cinerea transform into so-called aszú berries with a high sugar content. From these, sweet must is pressed, giving the wine its characteristic golden-amber color, honey-fruity aroma, and complex sweet taste with a long finish.

Types of Tokaj wines

Tokaj Furmint – drier, mineral style with pronounced acidity.
Tokaj selection (3–6 putts) – traditional sweet Tokaj wine, where “putt” refers to the amount of aszú berries.
Tokaj samorodné – wine made from grapes with varying proportions of aszú berries, can be dry or sweet.
Tokaj essence – rare and exceptionally sweet wine with high density, considered a gem among Tokajs.
