Tequila Añejo (translated as aged) represents the pinnacle of tequila craftsmanship. It ages for a minimum of one year, often 2 to 3 years, in small oak barrels, which give it a rich and rounded character. The law precisely states that only tequila aged for more than 12 months can bear the Añejo designation.

What does añejo tequila taste like? 

Añejo tequilas have a deep, complex flavor with notes of vanilla, caramel, cocoa, roasted nuts, and subtle smoke. The agave base remains present but is complemented by warm, rounded wood tones. Each sip brings a balanced contrast between sweetness and a dry, woody finish.

Aging as a source of excellence

The aging process in barrels is key to the excellence of Añejo tequilas. Over long months, tequila loses its sharp edges, gaining a darker amber hue and full aroma. Premium brands age in bourbon or wine barrels, further enhancing their aroma and color.

True Añejo tequilas are exclusively 100% blue agave. Compared to cheaper mixed versions (mixto), they offer a smoother texture, longer finish, and zero harshness. They are meant for slow sipping, much like cognac or rum.
