San Lino is a Cuban rum with a long and fascinating story that goes back to the 19th century. Its origins are tied to Ingenio San Lino, a sugar mill and distillery founded in 1862 in the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba. It was established by José Ramón de Montalvo y Rodríguez and Lino Montalvo y Rodríguez, and already in 1866 the facility installed an alembic still, marking the beginning of rum and aguardiente production.

San Lino quickly rose to prominence as one of the most advanced distilleries of its time – it was technologically innovative, using bagazo verde as fuel, and in the 1880s it introduced modern sugar-making techniques such as vacuum pans and multi-stage evaporation. Rum from this distillery became renowned for its smooth yet distinctive character.

The tradition of production was later carried on at Bodegas Jagua in Cienfuegos, where San Lino rum was made and blended until 1971, when the site was struck by a devastating fire. In 1972, the barrels and stocks were moved to Ronera Central, ensuring the continuation of Cuban rum-making tradition under the San Lino name.

Today, the brand San Lino Ron de Cuba draws upon these historical roots. It is made from molasses of locally grown Cuban sugarcane, slowly distilled in column stills, and aged in ex-bourbon barrels. The most famous expression is San Lino Carta Oro Extra Añejo, an amber-colored rum with golden highlights, offering aromas of vanilla, spice, dried fruit, and wood. Its flavor is complex – honey, vanilla, molasses, tropical fruit, and subtle tobacco notes. The brand also produces San Lino Carta Blanca, a white rum with a fresh, fruity aroma and a light taste, ideal for mixed drinks.
