Peat's Beast

Peat's Beast is a Scottish single malt whisky created by independent bottler Fox Fitzgerald. The brand was established in 2011 when Eamonn Jones (former regional director of Whyte & Mackay) and Gerald Erdrich (importer) decided to combine their experience and passion for peat – they wanted to create a whisky that would clearly show its peaty character, something like the “peatiest single malt” available to a wider audience.

The brand does not publicly disclose the specific distillery from which the whisky originates; it is a "mystery / undisclosed distillery," which means that the raw material (single malt) is sourced from one (or more) traditional Scottish distilleries, but without explicitly stating where exactly.

Peat's Beast is designed to "bite": expect a strong peat punch, sea notes, wood, tar, ash, smoke, spicy and slightly salty elements. The profile is ambitious – the "beast" in the name suggests that this is a whiskey that needs to be "tamed" with a drop of water, for example, but at the same time with respect for the youth and strength of the distillate.

Most reviews say that although smoke and peat dominate, the whiskey is not completely extreme (not like the heaviest Islay peated whiskeys), so it can be an introduction to the world of strong smoke even for those who are not used to it.

The bottle design is enriched with artistic style: labels with burnt edges, a "beast" motif of wild nature, illustrator Doug Alves is responsible for the graphic design of the label.

The first editions were limited – for example, only ~ 5,000 bottles were available in the first version.

Peat's Beast is not just one version – there are editions with higher alcohol content (cask strength), cask finishes (sherry finish), and older vintages (e.g., 25-year-old, 30-year-old, 34-year-old, depending on what is available) for collectors.

The whisky is Scottish (“Scotland”) – so all the standard rules for Scotch whisky apply (distillation, casks, at least 3 years of maturation).

The region is not always explicitly stated – some labels say "Speyside single malt," which indicates that the raw materials (water, barley, distillation process) come from the Speyside region, or that the whisky exhibits the characteristics of that region.
