Olmeca Tequila is a Mexican brand with a rich history that began in 1967 when Seagram acquired a distillery right in the town of Tequila, Jalisco. Since 1994, a modern distillery Destilería Colonial de Jalisco in the Los Altos area of Jalisco has been built at an elevation of approximately 2,100 m above sea level. This region is known for its mineral-rich volcanic soil, which contributes to the sweeter, fruitier, and smoother profiles of the agave.

In 2001, the brand came under the wing of the Pernod Ricard group, which significantly expanded its international presence through The Absolut Group. Today, Olmeca is the second best-selling premium tequila outside of Mexico and the USA, ranking among the top-selling brands in some EMEA regions.

Olmeca produces several product lines – the basic Olmeca Silver and Gold, which are mixto tequilas (at least 51% blue agave), and the higher premium lines Olmeca Altos and Olmeca Tezón, which use 100% blue agave and the traditional tahona production technique of Olmeca.

Production steps include hand-harvesting mature blue agave after 6 – 8 years of growth, slow baking in traditional ovens, crushing with tahona to extract sweet juice, fermentation with original yeasts that promote fresh fruit notes, and subsequent distillation in column and copper stills of Olmeca. Aging Reposado and Añejo takes place in bourbon barrels, achieving a sweet, oaky character with subtle depth.

The brand name "Olmeca" draws from the legacy of the oldest civilization in former Mexico – the Olmecs, who around 1000 BC likely discovered the first fermented agave drinks, the precursors to today's tequila. This historical connection is evident in the label design and visual identity of the brand.
