Licor Beirão is a traditional Portuguese herbal liqueur originating from the town of Lousã in the Beira region. The name Licor Beirão, which can be loosely translated as "liqueur from Beira," began to be used in 1929 and refers to the region of its origin. An important milestone came in 1940, when José Carranca Redondo took over the business and the secret recipe. He founded J. Carranca Redondo Lda. and gradually transformed the regional product into one of the most well-known Portuguese brands.

José Carranca Redondo understood the importance of advertising at a time when extensive marketing campaigns were not yet common in Portugal. Billboards along roads and in cafes helped the brand build national recognition. The label "O Licor de Portugal" – The Liqueur of Portugal later became firmly associated with the brand.

Production in the Heart of the Serra da Lousã Mountains

Licor Beirão is still produced today at the family estate Quinta do Meiral near the town of Lousã. The property, covering more than 12 hectares, serves as the company headquarters, production site, and a place where part of the aromatic plants used in production are cultivated.

The base of the liqueur is a protected blend of plants, seeds, and spices from Portugal and other parts of the world. The botanical raw materials undergo maceration followed by double distillation in copper distillation equipment. The resulting aromatic component is then combined with water, alcohol, sugar, and caramel according to a precisely defined family recipe.

Production remains in the hands of the Redondo family, who pass the recipe and experience down to future generations. Each bottle is also complemented by a characteristic ribbon applied by hand, which remains one of the recognizable details of the brand.

How to Drink Licor Beirão

Licor Beirão is traditionally served chilled, on ice, or with a piece of lemon peel. Due to its sweet-herbal profile, it is also suitable as a digestif after meals. At the same time, it is a versatile liqueur for cocktails – for example, it is used in the Portuguese drink Caipirão, which is inspired by the classic caipirinha.
