When the doors of the Kilbeggan distillery closed in 1953, the people of Kilbeggan could easily accept defeat. They could acknowledge that times had changed and that fate had dealt them more than just adversity. However, they did nothing of the sort.

The distillery meant too much to too many people in the city. They would never allow its smoking chimney to become a monument, no matter what the world had in store for them. when we started, there was no money. If they wanted to do something, they had to do it themselves.

One Saturday morning in 1983, they got a key and walked in. Every place was covered with rubble and falling beams. Completely abandoned. All the roofs had caved in, all the windows had been blown out. It was a huge, sprawling complex of dilapidated buildings and we had absolutely nothing. Everybody brought their own tools. Chisels, hammers, saws, things like that.

There was something very appealing about the waterwheel. The sound of the water on it. The sight of it. It had a really deep effect on everybody. They realized that there was something more to the restoration of the distillery.

That Kilbeggan Distillery is alive and well is a testament to the people who live here today. The process that is used to distill the whisky is a testament to the people who were here before. The same stills from centuries ago are still on site and whisky is still being distilled in a building built long before the advent of electricity.
