The company Joya de Nicaragua was founded in 1968 as the first producer of premium cigars in the country. It is the oldest brand of cigars made in Nicaragua. The company continues to produce its products today from its headquarters in Estelí. Today, it is the main manufacturing center for hand-made cigars.

Before Alejandro Martinez Cuenca arrived in 1994, the brand was slowly declining, mainly due to the war and a fire that completely destroyed the brand's manufacturing facilities. Martinez Cuenca brought fresh ideas, re-employed the people who contributed to its previous glory, and reintroduced to the world a cigar that represented the quality of the brand in the past – Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970. Since then, the Joya de Nicaragua brand has released many new premium quality cigars and ranks among one of the most significant cigar brands.
