The tequila brand Jose Cuervo is a family heritage that has been passed down from generation to generation for over 250 years. It all began in 1758 when José Antonio de Cuervo y Valdés received land in the Mexican town of Tequila from the Spanish king to cultivate blue agave.
His son, José María Guadalupe de Cuervo, obtained an official license to produce and sell "vino de mezcal" in 1795, creating the first legally registered tequila in the world – and thus the Jose Cuervo brand. Since then, the family has continuously dedicated itself to producing this unique Mexican distillate according to the same recipe.
In 1812, the La Rojeña distillery was established, which is still the oldest active distillery in Latin America. It is here that all Jose Cuervo products are made – from growing their own agave, to slow cooking, traditional pressing, and distillation in copper pot stills.
Thanks to an innovative approach, Jose Cuervo became the first producer in the 19th century to start bottling tequila in glass bottles, significantly simplifying distribution and export. As early as 1852, the brand was exporting its products to California, paving the way for international markets. And in the 20th century, it was also at the birth of the iconic Margarita cocktail, with which it is still associated today.
The brand is still owned by the Beckmann family, direct descendants of the founders, who have been running the company for 11 generations. In 2017, they went public as part of the Becle group, but the family spirit and quality control remain unchanged. Today, Jose Cuervo is the best-selling tequila in the world, available in over 85 countries, and an icon of Mexican culture and craftsmanship. In addition to production, the brand is also involved in the development of the Tequila region – supporting education, sustainable agriculture, and tourism, for example through the legendary Jose Cuervo Express train that connects Guadalajara with the town of Tequila.
