Grappa is a traditional Italian spirit with an alcohol content ranging from 37.5% to 60%, typically served as a digestif after meals. It gets its name from the town of Bassano del Grappa in the Veneto region, where the production of this aromatic drink has a centuries-old tradition.

How Grappa is Made

Grappa is produced by distilling pomace – the solid remains after pressing grapes. This includes the skins, seeds, and stems left over from winemaking.

Since 1951, the name grappa has been legally protected and can only be used for distillate produced in Italy.

The result is a drink with a characteristic grape aroma, pronounced flavor, and full bouquet that reflects the grape variety and region of origin.

Styles and Flavors of Grappa

Grappa Bianca – clear, unaged, fresh, and fruity.
Grappa Invecchiata – aged in oak barrels, with subtle notes of vanilla and wood.
Grappa Aromatica – made from aromatic varieties like Moscato or Gewürztraminer, distinctly fragrant and smooth.

Each type has its place – from fresh aperitifs to honeyed deep digestifs.

How to Enjoy Grappa

It is best enjoyed at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass that concentrates the aroma. Grappa pairs wonderfully with espresso (known as caffè corretto), blue cheeses, or chocolate desserts.
