The brand Captain Morgan was created by Seagram in 1944. It was originally based in Jamaica, where the rum was produced at the Long Pond distillery. Captain Morgan has become synonymous with spiced rum and a distinctive aroma that still carries the spirit of the Caribbean.

From Pharmacy Recipe to Global Brand

The first blends were created in Kingston, where the Levy family owned a pharmacy. They purchased unrefined rum from the Long Pond distillery, which they mixed with herbs and spices to create a "medicinal" product. The CEO of Seagram, Samuel Bronfman, loved this original drink and acquired the rights to it – thus, Captain Morgan as we know it today was born.

From Jamaica to Puerto Rico

The U.S. government wanted to boost employment in Puerto Rico, so it offered incentives for rum producers. Seagram seized this opportunity and built a factory near San Juan. Later, the brand was acquired by Diageo, which expanded it worldwide.

The Legacy of Captain Morgan

The brand bears the name of Sir Henry Morgan – a Welsh privateer from the 17th century, whose courage and adventurous spirit are reflected in every bottle. Today, Captain Morgan is among the most famous rums in the world and is the second-largest spirits producer on the planet.
