Captain Morgan – rum with the spiced heart of the Caribbean
The Captain Morgan brand was created by the Seagram company in 1944. It was originally based in Jamaica, where rum was produced at the Long Pond distillery. Captain Morgan has become synonymous with spiced rum and its distinctive aroma that still carries the spirit of the Caribbean.
From a pharmacy recipe to a global brand
The first blends were made in Kingston, where the Levy family owned a pharmacy. They bought unrefined rum from the Long Pond distillery, mixed it with herbs and spices, and created a “medicinal” product. Seagram’s CEO, Samuel Bronfman, fell in love with this unique recipe and bought the rights to it – and so Captain Morgan, as we know it today, was born.
From Jamaica to Puerto Rico
The U.S. government aimed to boost employment in Puerto Rico and introduced incentives for rum producers. Seagram took advantage of this program and built a factory near San Juan. Later, the brand was acquired by Diageo, which expanded it worldwide.
The legacy of Captain Morgan
The brand is named after Sir Henry Morgan – a Welsh privateer from the 17th century whose courage and adventurous spirit live on in every bottle. Today, Captain Morgan is one of the most famous rums in the world and the second-largest spirits producer on the planet.
