Borovička is a traditional Slovak alcoholic drink with a distinctive juniper aroma and flavor. It is made from juniper distillate or macerate, often blended with fine alcohol.

The alcohol content typically sits around 40%, giving it a strong, fresh character.

Origin and character

The origin of Borovička dates back to the time when gin-like spirits began to be produced in Central Europe. Unlike gin, Borovička uses exclusively juniper berries without any additional herbs. Within the European Union, it holds a protected geographical indication confirming its Slovak origin.

Varieties of Borovička

Today, there are many versions of this “forest” spirit – lime, cranberry, even pink, or golden with a sprig of juniper inside the bottle. The most famous and popular flavor is Borovička with gentian. It is made by infusing gentian root in Borovička. Gentian is a mountain plant whose root has been traditionally used in folk medicine to aid digestion.
