The Akashi brand is closely associated with the White Oak distillery, located in the city of Akashi in Hyogo Prefecture. The distillery was established in 1888, originally producing sake and shochu, but in 1919 it obtained a licence to distil whisky, becoming one of the pioneers of Japanese whisky.

From the domestic market to modern production

In its early decades, production focused mainly on blended whiskies intended for the domestic market, with the brand developing gradually and without an emphasis on large-scale volumes. A more significant shift came in 1984, when the distillery was adapted for larger-scale whisky production and began to develop its own style more systematically.

Akashi today and recommended bottles

The distillery is owned by Eigashima Shuzo. Among the best-known bottles in the brand’s portfolio is Akashi Blended, the flagship expression with an approachable and well-balanced character. Another good choice is Akashi Meisei, which appeals with its clean, elegant profile and subtly layered flavour.
