In 1866, Jack Daniel founded his own distillery in Lynchburg, making it the oldest registered distillery in the United States. Interestingly, Lynchburg is located in a dry county (Moore County), where the sale of alcohol is still prohibited – meaning Jack Daniel’s is made in a place where it technically cannot be sold.

Jack Daniel passed away in 1911, but his legacy lives on. After his death, his nephew Lem Motlow took over the business, guiding the brand through Prohibition and reviving it in the 1940s.
